Can Tho city is large, modern and most developed in the Mekong Delta, as well as a centrally City since 2004, is located on the right bank of the Hau River, located in the Mekong River delta. This is the 4th largest city in 5 cities under central Vietnam. June 24, 2009, Can Tho City officially the Prime Minister's decision to recognize the grade 1 of Vietnam.
Can Tho Overview
Can Tho City is located in the center of the Mekong Delta. It is contiguous to 5 provinces: An Giang on the north, Dong Thap on the north-east, Hau Giang on the south, Kien Giang on the west, and Vinh Long on the east. With its strength, Can Tho is well known as a must see destination in Vietnam cruise tours through Mekong Delta.

Can Tho has a complex of rivers and canals such as Hau, and Can Tho rivers, Thot Not, and O Mon canals, but the Hau River is considered a benefactor of this region Since yearly floods deposit large quantities of alluvia to the rice fields, Can Tho becomes "the green lungs of the Mekong Delta"
Can Tho History
In 1680, Mac Cuu (1655 - 1735) with his company traveled from Guangdong, China to Ha Tien by boat and settled there for land reclamation.
Tran Giang (first name of Can Tho) was discovered by Nguyen Cu Trinh (1716 - 1767), a legate under Lord Vo Vuong Nguyen Xuan Khoat who came and worked with Mac Thien Tich (1718 - 1780), Mac
Cuu's son.
On 01 January 1868, South Vietnam governor decided to merge Phong Phu county (Tran Giang - Can Tho) and Bai Sao (Soc Trang) and formed one district with the head office in Sa Dec.
On 30 April 1872, the governor decided to merge Phong Phu and Bac Trang, then establish one county with the head office in Tra On. And one year later, Head office Tra On was removed to Cai Rang (Can Tho).
On 23 February 1876, Sai Gon governor gave a decision to merge Phong Phu with a part of
An Xuyen and Tan Thanh to Can Tho. Since then, Can Tho came into the map of Vietnam.
In December 1991, the Assembly of Socialist Republic of Vietnam announced a decree to split Hau Giang province into two provinces Can Tho and Soc Trang. So, in early 1992, Can Tho came back to its hundred-years-old name.
Can Tho climate and best time to visit
The climate is harmonized with few of storms. It is hot and humid all year. The rainy season lasts from May to November, and dry season lasts from December to April. The annual average temperature is 27ºC.

The best time to visit Can Tho is in the dry season because if you travel during the rainy season, many tours will be cancel because of a flood.

Can Tho is 34km from Vinh Long, 62km from Long Xuyen, 63km from Soc Trang, 104km from My Tho, 116km from Rach Gia, 117km from Chau Doc, 169km from Ho Chi Minh City and 179km from Ca Mau.
Can Tho has National Highway No.1A, 91, 80 linking to
An Giang and Kien Giang provinces.
Can Tho has Cai Cui international seaport, and this city is the
center of waterway network of Mekong Delta. There are daily hydrofoils between Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho City.

Things to do and see in Can Tho
Long Tuyen Village
Located in the southwest part of Can Tho River, the village used to be a subdivision of Luc Ap before Can Tho Province was incorporated, then it became Binh Hung village during the reign of Thieu
Tri King (a king of Nguyễn Dynasty).
In 1852, following the arrival of Huynh Man Dat, a province chief who escaped from danger to this site, this village was renamed Binh Thuy.
Ninh Kieu Pier
Can Tho City lie along one of the biggest rivers in Mekong Delta – Hau river. To have the whole view of this river, travelers should spend some time at Ninh Kieu dock which is the symbol of Can Tho city

Xuan Khanh Quarter
The Xuan Khanh quarter is the geological center of the city and part of the Ninh Kieu district. In the 18th century, the quarter was originally named Tham Tướng after the general Tham Tướng who fought the Siamese troops in 1772 that were advancing from Ha Tien. As with so many places, the name of the area was changed after the Vietnamese war to reflect the ideology of the new regime in power.
Cai Khe Market
Cái Khế Commercial Center is a big market on Trần Văn Khéo street catering for businesses including restaurants and hotels as well as end consumers. The market stretches over two sides of the street, with the area facing the river offering products for daily use, fish, and other fresh food products that arrive on the river. On the other side of the market, you will find many wholesalers for textiles and home products.
