Cat Ba island is one of the most beautiful places in Northern Vietnam along with Ha Long Bay. It is not only famous for beach holidays but also a biological preservation center of rare flora and fauna. Cat Ba island is always an ideal destination to escape the busy life.
Cat Ba Overview
Rugged, craggy and jungle-clad Cat Ba, the largest island in Ha Long Bay, has experienced a tourism surge in recent years. The central hub of Cat Ba Town is now framed by a chain of low-rise concrete hotels along its once-lovely bay, but the rest of the island is largely untouched and as wild as ever.

With idyllic Lan Ha Bay just offshore you'll soon overlook Cat Ba Town's overdevelopment. At present, Cat Ba island is well known as one of the favorite Vietnam beach holiday destinations.

Almost half of Cat Ba Island (with a total area of 354 and 90 km of the adjacent waters were declared a national park in 1986 to protect the island’s diverse ecosystems. Most of the coastline consists of rocky cliffs, but there are some sandy beaches and tiny fishing villages hidden away in small coves.
Cat Ba History
The crust in Cat Ba region has geologic history of 500 - 600 million years; Archaeological records show the evidence of human beings dated 6000-7000 years on this archipelago. Cat Ba is also home of the rich fauna and flora.
Cat Ba National Park was established by the Decision 79/CP by the Government Cabinet. In 2004, Cat Ba was recognized a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO with the core zone is Cat Ba National Park.
Since its inscription to the World Biosphere Reserve List by UNESCO, the natural conservation activities initiated in the site management plan of Cat Ba National Park have been strengthened  and attracted more community participation. Significant results of these activities have been achieved in wildlife conservation. According to statistics by IUCN (Mr. Ashley Brooks), there have been 42 initiatives and projects undertaken on Cat Ba archipelago within 10 years (1995-2005) by national and international organizations and individuals to preserve the site and its natural properties.
Cat Ba climate and best time to visit
There are really two seasons here; summer is hot and this is when the rain will come. It will be rather cold and windy at times between October and March until summer approaches. The average temperature of summer is 24 degree Celsius and can reach to 30 degree Celsius. In contrast, the average temperature in winter is 13 degree Celsius. Normally, the best time to take a Cat Ba island tour is during summer vacation.
Cat Ba Transportation
From Hanoi you can get to Cat Ba Island by booking the cruises in Lan Ha Bay then they will go to Vietnam Hai Village on Cat Ba Island. That is easy as it will be included in the cruise trip.
If you just want to go to Cat Ba Island only but not the cruise, you can book a bus from Hanoi to Tuan Chau Harbour then take a fairy to Gia Luan Harbour then get a taxi or bus to Cat Ba Town.
You also can get a bus to Got Harbour then take a fairy to Cat Ba Island then take a bus to the center.

Things to do and see in Cat Ba
Right from the moment of setting foot on Cat Ba gangway, you will be carried away by the immense blue sky, flickering sight of mountains and fresh salty air from the ocean. This natural dose of massage is likely to relieve all the dizziness from your long trip.
If you are not on a package tour, make sure to call and reserve your hotel in advance, for the island accommodation facility is rather limited for the number of visitors, especially during the summer. If you can, try to get one that
faces the ocean and lean against the mountain.
Visiting the popular beaches of Cat Co and Cat Dua, one can enjoy the blue and warm water, and so clear that he or she can see the golden sand beneath. If you prefer something more quiet and calm, you can hire a motor boat or kayak to sail to the small islets, where there Cat Trai Gai, Duong
Gianh and Hien Hao beaches are located.
The mountain adjacent to Cat Co Beach has a tunnel and several fascinating caves and grottoes, such as Hang
Luon, Khe Sau, Trung Trang, Gia Luan and Kim Cuong. Unlike the well-lit caves of Ha Long Bay, visiting these caves and grottoes give you a better feel of being an explorer or conqueror of natural wonder and mysteries.

Coming out of the caves and grottoes in a
late afternoon, you will be thrilled by the sunset over Lan Ha Bay. Against the background of a golden horizon and the dark blue sea, the heaving islets become multiform, the sea-eagles make circles in the sky, an experience that you cannot afford to miss while on Cat Ba.
Cat Ba Travel Tips

Visiting Hai Phong is an exciting experience. You can go to the city to different ways. You can go there by crossing on the Cam River Ferry, you can reach the city overland from Halong Bay or you can take it will and run along the coast of Vietnam for 12 kilometers either from Halong or Cat Ba Island.

Both seaways offer wonderful views with plenty of islands along the Halong and Cat Ba archipelago. Quite a few tourists choose this way to avoid going over the same routes once more.
