Mondulkiri Overview
Mondulkiri is an eastern province of Cambodia, which is the most sparsely populated province in the whole country although being the largest province in Cambodia. The province is chock full of natural beauty, with thickly forested mountains, powerful waterfalls and the lush green rolling hills of the western side. Despite the growing deforestation, especially due to the valuable minerals remaining in the deep red, fertile ground, Mondulkiri has still one of the biggest successional woodlands of Cambodia.
Mondulkiri History

In 1960 Mondulkiri was created out of Kratié Province by order of King Norodom Sihanouk. Saen Monorom was set up as the capital in 1962. During the Vietnam War in the late 1960s, Mondulkiri was home to three bases of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam which resulted in numerous incursions and bombings by US forces. About 1970 the area fell under Khmer Rouge domination. Subsequently, much of the populace was forcibly removed to Koh Nhek (Kaoh Nheaek) district to provide labor for rice growing. Schools, hospitals, even entire villages were destroyed. As many as half of the people in the province died during the forced relocation in the 1970s.

The Bunong people appear to have lived in the provincial area for about 2000 years, but there is little documentation until France colonized Cambodia in 1864. Like other people in the province, the Bunong were displaced in the 1970s and only allowed to return to their traditional homeland in the 1980s.

Mondulkiri climate and best time to visit

One of mondulkiri’s main attraction point is it’s cool climate, which offers a nice break from the heat and humidity of Cambodia's tropical plains.

Due to Sen Monorom’s higher altitude, temperatures are typically 5-10 degrees lower than elsewhere in Cambodia, air humidity is lower too.

Dry/ Cool season: December - February
Cold & dry northeast winds dry our Mondulkiri’s hills and scatter red dust. The indigenous farmers often use fire in order to clear their fields. Winter nights can get windy & downright chilly in Sen Monorom.

Summer/ Hot season: March - June

In early March, the weather gets warmer: the heat build up electricity, which brings on the first annual showers or “Mango rains”.
Mondulkiri’s hills grow green again between March & April. In this season, there are many beautiful flowers and it’s bird’s mating season.

Wet/ Rainy season: July - October
The wet season in Mondulkiri is very lush & green. If you're trekking in the wet season - It is the best time for viewing wildlife. July & early August can still have sunny days & dry mornings, while afternoons & evenings are usually rainy.

Mondulkiri Transportation

There is no airport in Mondulkiri, we can get there by bus/ minivan or private car.

From Phnom Penh - Mondulkiri

There are now two companies we can recommend who providing fast and comfortable 12 seat minivans from Phnom Penh to Sen Monorom.  Virak Buntham and Rithya Mondulkiri Express.  They generally take 5-6 hours to complete the journey.  They have 1-2 short toilet stops along the way.  You can now book your journey there online or get any guesthouse in Cambodia to book this trip for you.

From Siem Reap - Mondulkiri

A new service now travels between Siem Reap and Mondulkiri via Kompong Cham.  It is called the Rithya Mondulkiri Express.  Leaves  at 7.45am and arrives in Sen Monorom around 4.00pm.  Their bus stop is located on Road 6, 100 metres on the right past Borey Seang Nam (main Siem Reap bus station).  The trip from town is around 20 minutes and will cost $3-$5 by tuk tuk.  There is a local cafe next door selling breakfast.

Mondulkiri Travel Tips
Many of the goods in the market are from nearby Vietnam, It's an all-purpose market, but it doesn't have the feel of the typical Cambodian market, which is probably again due to the closeness of Vietnam and the hill tribe people who come here. There are definitely some nice bracelets, adornments or Kramas made by the hill tribes acquirable. You'll find noodle, dessert and fruit stalls at the font end of the market and the moneychangers are in front as well. They change dollars, riel and the Vietnamese dong.
